At Houston, the UVU baseball team pushed its winning streak to 27 games with a doubleheader sweep over Houston Baptist University. Despite battling 90-plus degree heat all day long, the Wolverines (34-11, 19-0 GWC) took the first game 7-5 and the second 14-8.
"Our guys did a great job of staying focused and continuing to do what they do," said UVU coachEric Madsen. "We swung the bat pretty well and it was nice to see us get two more wins."
The Wolverines jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first game after two runs in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth. HBU (18-26, 10-9 GWC) battled back and made it a 6-5 contest however late in the game as it scored two in the last of the fourth, two more in the fifth and a single run in the sixth.
Taylor Mangumcame on for UVU when the Huskies were threatening for more in the sixth and pitched lights out as he drew an inning-ending double-play ground ball from Kolby Arnst in the sixth. Then in the seventh he pitched around an error and drew a game-ending double play ball from Asai Adame to help the Wolverines hold on to the seven-inning contest.
OffensivelyKai HatchandAustin Heapsboth went 2-for-4 to lead the Wolverines. Hatch drove home three runs and Heaps plated two.
In the second game, Utah Valley jumped all over Houston Baptist's starter Ross Kennell as it scored five in the first and four more in the second off of him and sent nine batters to the plate in each of the first two innings to take a quick 9-0 lead. After the Huskies pulled to within 11-7, Sean Moyshadded some insurance for the Wolverines with a two-run home run to right in the seventh and Hatch also drove home another run in the frame to extend UVU's lead to 14-7.
Utah Valley hat 22 hits in the second game. Hatch and Heaps led the way for the Wolverines again as they each had four hits in the second game.Jake RickenbachandGoose Kallunkialso added three hits apiece as well.
The Wolverines and Huskies will close out the series today at noon MT.
• BYU softball: At Reno, Nev., the BYU softball team earned two wins two different ways, defeating Nevada 10-0 and 7-4 to sweep the series and finish out the regular season.
The wins give BYU (40-13, 15-4) at least a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in next week's WAC Tournament. The Cougars have won 11 games in a row and 16 of their last 17, giving BYU its eighth straight 40-win season.
"The girls played great," said BYU coach Gordon Eakin. "I'm really proud of them and for getting 40 wins this season."
In Game 1, every Cougar in the starting lineup had at least one hit and all but one scored at least one run. In the circle, Tori Almond pitched the shutout with eight strikeouts.
The Cougars scored their runs in two innings, getting four in the third and six in the fifth inning. JC Clayton hit a triple to knock in Shelbi Everett after Everett lead off the inning wtih a double.
Delaney Willard and Katie Manuma came up in the next two at bats, hitting back-to-back home runs, the third straight game with a homer for Willard and the third homer in two games for Manuma.
Six hits resulted in six more runs to end the game in the fifth. Willard hit an RBI-single before a Stacie Toney triple brought in two more runs. Krista Hicks then followed with a double to score Toney. Everett and Jessica Dugas also had an RBI apiece before the inning ended.
